Cistercian VR

Educational VR | Interaction & gameplay functionality

Cistercian VR is an educational VR game about the life of Cistercian monks, made at Strand Forge. The player stands inside a monastery and learns how the order actually lived, including the sign language the monks used because their rule kept them largely silent. My work was the layer underneath: progress across the scenes, the menus, the localisation, a handful of simple hand mechanics, and getting the whole thing to run in VR in the first place.

My role

  • Built the progress system that spans the individual scenes, so what the player has already completed carries from one scene into the next.
  • Scripted the menus.
  • Did the localisation into Czech, English and German.
  • Built the simple mechanics the player performs: chopping wood, adding ingredients to a cauldron, choosing the right gesture for a given food, praying, and the VR controller handling that all of them sit on.
  • The largest piece of work was not any single mechanic. It was getting the project to run in VR at all, and that work sat in the VR libraries the build depends on.

Systems I designed

  • A progress system that holds across the separate scenes, so the player's progress is not lost when the game moves between them.
  • Localisation in three languages: Czech, English and German.
  • A VR input layer: controller handling done through the VR libraries, which every one of the mechanics is built on top of.
