Tavern Dice
Push-your-luck dice | Probability & meta-progression | Unity – C#
Tavern Dice is a personal prototype — a push-your-luck dice game in the vein of the tavern game from Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Six dice, a scoring table, and one decision repeated over and over: bank what you have, or roll again and risk the lot. It was built over roughly one week and is currently at version 0.2.0.
My role
- Designed and built the whole thing solo — rules, scoring, opponent AI, UI and progression.
- Wrote the scoring resolver: it has to find every valid combination in a roll and tell the player what is worth keeping.
- Built the collectible dice as weighted probability profiles rather than cosmetics — a die changes how the odds fall, which is the actual reward.
Systems I designed
- A scoring table with clearly separated tiers — big straight 1500, small straights 750 and 500, three of a kind from 200 up to 1000 for three ones, singles at 100 and 50.
- The bust rule that makes the whole loop tense: a roll with no scoring combination wipes everything banked that turn.
- The opposite release valve: if every die in a roll scores, the player gets all six back and rolls again — and keeps the points.
- Eleven dice as a progression track, each with its own probability profile and flavour: the Lucky die makes ones and fives twice as likely, the Devil's Head unlocks from 200 points.
- A victory-point meta layer above the match: winning pays out victory points and can award a new die, so a lost match still moves the collection forward.
- Named opponents with their own lines — beating Vávra z Nechanic gets you „One more beer and I'll win it back!" — so a match has a face rather than a score column.
Core mechanics
- Roll six dice, tap the ones that form a scoring combination and set them aside.
- Then choose: bank the points and pass the turn, or keep and roll the remaining dice for more.
- First to the match goal — 1500 points — takes it.
- Before a match you fit your dice into the slots you have unlocked, which is where the collection turns into a decision.
